Recessed track light installations done without proper advance planning are one of the most common sources of unnecessary rework costs. Unlike surface-mounted systems, recessed tracks require ceiling preparation that cannot be easily reversed. This checklist covers what to verify before your installer begins work.
1. Measure the Space and Plan the Track Layout
The first step is deciding where the track runs, not where the fixtures point. That decision comes later.
- Measure the room and mark the positions of key furniture (sofa, dining table, kitchen counter, display cases)
- Determine which positions need direct lighting vs. ambient fill
- Calculate total track length required

2. Verify Ceiling Depth and Structural Position
Recessed track requires cutting into the ceiling, which means knowing what’s inside it:
- Minimum ceiling depth: The ceiling cavity must be at least 100mm deep for standard recessed track profiles
- Steel frame positions: Track must not cross steel framing (it cannot be cut through). Locate all frame members before finalizing the layout
- Existing conduit and wiring: Know the positions of any electrical cables already routed through the ceiling to avoid cutting through them
If uncertain, have the installer use a stud finder and wiring detector before marking cut lines.
3. Run Power Supply Wiring Beforehand
Magnetic track systems require a power supply that converts 220V AC to 48V DC. This means a 220V AC feed must reach the power supply location before the track is installed.
- The power supply feed is most easily run during construction or renovation when walls are open
- For retrofits, an electrician must route new cable before the installation appointment
- The power supply itself should be concealed in the ceiling cavity — plan for a service access point if your ceiling type requires it
If you schedule the track light installation before the electrical rough-in is complete, expect delays and additional cost.
4. Select and Order Fixtures Before Installation Day
Before confirming your installation appointment, have the fixture count and specs finalized:
- Fixture spacing: Typically 1–1.5 meters apart, adjusted for room size and target light level. See how to calculate track lights for the formula
- Wattage per fixture: Confirm total system wattage does not exceed the power supply’s rated capacity

5. Prepare the Work Area
Practical steps that make the installation faster and cleaner:
- Clear the floor area below all installation points — furniture underneath slows work significantly
- Arrange for a proper stepladder, not a chair. Ceiling work on chairs is slower and creates risk
- Photograph the existing ceiling from below before cuts are made, particularly if wiring routes are visible through inspection panels
- Confirm the main breaker location and verify the circuit can be isolated for safe working
