Track Light Color Consistency — Why Fixtures Do Not Match and How to Fix It

You install identical track lights — same wattage, same rated color temperature, same brand — and when you switch them all on, some read noticeably warmer and others noticeably cooler, even though they came from the same order. This shows up constantly in showrooms, retail stores, and any space with dozens of fixtures on one rail. And if you don’t know the actual cause, you’ll keep fixing the wrong thing.

The Main Cause: LED Binning

Even LEDs made in the same factory from the same production run have small variations in their actual color temperature versus what’s printed on the spec sheet. Manufacturers sort chips into sub-groups based on measured color output — this is called “binning.” Quality track light manufacturers use chips from the same or a very close bin within a single product batch. Manufacturers cutting costs sometimes mix chips from multiple bins to reduce waste, which produces visibly mismatched color when fixtures are installed side by side.

The Measurement That Matters: SDCM

SDCM (Standard Deviation of Color Matching) measures how different two light sources are before the human eye can detect it. Lower SDCM means better consistency:

Other Factors That Can Make Color Look Mismatched

  • Viewing angle and distance — light from the same fixture can look different in color from different angles, so always compare fixtures from the same viewing position

  • Mismatched dimmers — dimming with a driver-dimmer combination that isn’t properly matched can shift color at lower brightness even if full-brightness color matches
  • Fixture age — older fixtures can shift color faster than newly installed ones, especially with inadequate heat dissipation

How to Prevent It From the Start

  1. Buy the full system from a single batch. When ordering multiple track lights for one space, order them all at once rather than adding more later from a different production run.
  2. Choose a brand that publishes SDCM ratings. If a seller can’t tell you the SDCM value, it usually means binning isn’t being controlled.
  3. Test fixtures side by side before final installation. Lay the fixtures out on the floor, switch them on together in a dark room, and compare color by eye before mounting them on the rail.
  4. Order spare fixtures from the same batch. On larger projects, order 5-10% extra from the same run to use as replacements, so you never have to mix in a mismatched batch later.
